Alasdair Gold has explained how Tottenham Hotspur have saved a possible ‘£28 million’ from their deal to sign Dejan Kulusevki from Juventus and the possible arrival of goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario.
The Tottenham transfer expert was painting the picture of Daniel Levy doing what the fans wanted and that’s paying the full amount Juventus wanted for Dejan Kulusevski and actually buying the club’s number one target, David Raya from Brentford.
He added that, instead, they saved ‘£4 million’ from the negotiations with Juventus for Kulusevski, whilst they didn’t bring in Raya for ‘£40 million’, and instead, they are on the verge of signing Empoli shot-stopper, Guglielmo Vicario, for ‘£16.3 million’, as he told his own YouTube channel.
You can bet your bottom dollar that if the latter signing doesn’t work out, then fans will be at Levy’s throat and how he has been penny-pinching once again.
That has been his issue throughout his time as chairman and how he doesn’t bring in that number one target or push the boat out for signings.
Nonetheless, with that money saved, Gold questioned whether that money could now be used to lure in someone like James Maddison, who is very much wanted by both Newcastle and Spurs.
“When you have this scenario where you want the big-money signing over the one everyone is raving about,” said Gold.
“Inter and Bayern Munich were looking at him. Man United seriously looked at him as well. I think you then have to balance it up and say ‘okay, maybe this is one of the signings we have been calling for’. But I understand the frustration (re Raya), I know where it comes from. I know the place where it comes from. I understand the feeling that this is the cheap option. I think it’s a good deal.
“I know we shouldn’t be looking at the finances, but when you look at it from that sense, they have saved about £4 million on the Kulusevski deal.
“Technically, they haven’t paid £40 million for Raya, instead, they have gone for £16.3 million – if you were to take that logic and to the people that wanted them to spend (for Raya), then they have saved £28 million on those two deals, where they didn’t go all out. They could put that £28 million to James Maddison or a top centre-back.”
Will Spurs sign Maddison?
One thing that can’t be denied, the relegated Leicester star is needed at Hotspur Way, it’s just a case of Spurs putting the money down on the table for his talents.
Given that he is English, an attacking player and an international, then it will probably add a few extra million to his fee.
This is where fans get frustrated with Levy because many can’t see him getting such a deal over the line and, as a result, they will have to wait yet another season to replace Christian Eriksen.
