Newcastle crashed out of the FA Cup at the hands of Cambridge United, yet had it not been for Dimitar Mitov, it could have been a different story.

The 24-year-old shot-stopper had a career-defining performance for the U’s as the Bulgarian goalkeeper made an array of incredible saves for the League One side to keep Newcastle at bay.

A former Bulgaria youth international, Mitov was the hero on the day as the Cambridge star wrote his name into FA Cup folklore with one of the best keeping displays in the competition in recent memory.

Indeed, it was yet another embarrassing cup exit for Newcastle, who have had rotten luck in domestic competitions in recent years in both the FA Cup and League Cup.

Yet this loss to Cambridge will sting for some time, and Mitov’s incredible display will no doubt linger in the minds of Newcastle supporters for many months to come.

Indeed, it was one of the most outrageous displays seen in the Cup in some time. And as you can expect, Newcastle fans on social media were full of praise for Mitov despite crashing out of the competition at the first hurdle.

With the January window open, some Newcastle fans were even suggesting that the club should make an offer for the former Charlton Athletic keeper, with the Toon this week confirming the signing of Kieran Trippier.
