Pundit Darren Bent has said that Liverpool star Andy Robertson has not yet surpassed Ashley Cole yet to be classed as the best left-back in Premier League history.
The Robertson-Cole debate kicked off online after the former became the highest-assisting defender (54) as Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Aston Villa 3-1 on Boxing Day.
For many, Ashley Cole remains the best left-back to ever grace the Premier League.

However, the £10 million (BBC Sport) star himself has become top dog for a number of fans due to both his brilliant attacking contributions coupled with his dogged defensive ability.
While it would be fair to state that the competition between both exemplary left-backs is neck-and-neck, many still back the Chelsea legend as the clear winner.
Pundit Darren Bent still backs Ashley Cole over Andy Robertson as the best left-back in Premier League history
Pundit Darren Bent said Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has not overtaken Ashley Cole as the best left-back to ever grace the Premier League.
“I rate Andy Robertson, I think he’s very, very good.”
“Listen, I’m not putting him in with Ashley Cole. Sometimes, we get too fixated on stats. Everything is stats, stats, stats!”
“Liverpool play differently to when Chelsea play, when he [Ashley Cole] was at his pomp or Arsenal to a certain degree. They play more on the front foot, the full-backs give them the width, that natural width.”
“The role of the full-back’s changed, as you’ve [Jason Cundy] just said there. For me, Ashley Cole is the best left-back this country we’ve produced in this country, the best to ever play in this country.”
“Who’s a better defender? Ashley Cole. I get it, the way Robertson gets forward, he gets across and all of that. But if I was picking a team today, I’m picking Ashley Cole”, he said on talkSPORT.
While there is no denying Ashley Cole’s greatness, Andy Robertson is certainly staking a strong claim for being the greatest left-back to ever play in the Premier League, despite Darren Bent’s take.
