Tony Cascarino thinks the criticism of Arsenal transfer target and West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice from Graeme Souness and Roy Keane is ‘unfair’.

The former striker added that ‘it’s incredible’ that two former greats, who played in Declan Rice’s position, have been so openly critical of the England international.

A number of weeks ago, Manchester United great Roy Keane stated that Rice ‘needs to do more’ and he doesn’t think he is having a great season for the Hammers.

Another legendary midfielder, this time one who donned the colours of Liverpool, thinks he needs to watch Real Madrid star Luka Modric if he wants to be ‘world class’.

Despite those comments, it hasn’t stopped Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal from wanting to bring the player on board this summer, Kevin Campbell suggested that ‘talks are on-going’ for his former side to sign the ‘top player’.

Nonetheless, despite those mixed opinions on the West Ham captain, former Republic of Ireland international Cascarino defended the player, as he told talkSPORT.

“Isn’t it incredible that two of the greatest midfield players, Souness and Keane, have been quite critical of Rice,” said Cascarino.

“Quite unfairly, in my opinion. That’s their position.”

RICE READY FOR THE STEP UP?

Many are expecting him to leave the London Stadium, but before he does, he will want to keep David Moyes’ side in the Premier League.

A total of nine teams are thrashing it out to stay in England’s top flight in what is, as of this moment, the closest relegation battle in history.

Either way, when Rice does move, the spotlight on the player will only grow bigger and with more heat, and if he doesn’t take that next step, then the likes of Keane and Souness will sharpen their knives again.
