Former Arsenal defender Perry Groves has tipped Tottenham Hotspur to make a move for Ollie Watkins this summer.
Spurs are in the market for a back-up to Harry Kane after loaning out Troy Parrott this summer.
With no other recognised number nine at the club, it’s obvious that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy will be adding a striker to Jose Mourinho’s squad.
The 24-year-old scored 26 Championship goals with Brentford last season, firing the Bees to a playoff final.
And Groves, who spent six years on Arsenal’s books until 1992, has told talkSPORT’s White and Sawyer show [broadcast 04/09, 10:00] that the Lilywhites should go after Watkins.
He said: “Jose always likes a big, strong centre-forward. I don’t think that [Troy Deeney] would excite the Tottenham fans. With Spurs, why don’t they go and buy a young player from the Championship who’s got potential, like an Ollie Watkins? Buy somebody with a lot of potential, somebody who can prove himself and learn off Harry Kane – that’s the route I think they should go.”
It remains to be seen if Watkins would even be keen on a move to Mourinho’s side.
Earlier this summer, the English hitman admitted his affection for the Gunners [SportsGazette], their North London rivals.
He might still jump at the chance to join the Lilywhites, but if – and it’s a big IF – they make a move, it’ll have to be quick as Aston Villa reportedly close in on his signing.
