Johnny Giles has suggested on Off The Ball that Manchester City should make a move for Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.

The former Manchester United and Leeds United midfielder has raved about Shelvey and has hailed his attributes.

Although Giles believes that signing the former Liverpool midfielder would be a “gamble”, he could prove to be a good signing for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Giles said on Off The Ball about Shelvey: “It would be a gamble, but if I was Guardiola, I’d be very tempted to go for him.

“He has the skill, he can pick a pass, he can distribute it, he’s a well-gifted lad and he might be at an age now with the right manager, in the right team – he’d be as good as he’d promised to be years ago.

“I think he’d be made for Guardiola because he’d be playing with top-class players. I think he’d have the respect for Guardiola and, at 28, he’d know this is the last chance. It would be a gamble, but I don’t think you’d have to pay that much for him.

“This guy, when he’s playing, he’s up there with the best, but particularly now, he is as good as there is in the Premier League.”

Stats

According to WhoScored, Shelvey has made 21 starts and one substitute appearance in the Premier League for Newcastle so far this season, scoring six goals and providing one assist in the process.

During the 2018-19 campaign, the 28-year-old midfielder made 10 starts and six substitute appearances in the league for the Magpies, scoring one goal and providing one goal in the process, according to WhoScored.

Unlikely Manchester City transfer

Shelvey is a good midfielder who seems to be at the top of his game, but it is hard to see City make a move for the former Liverpool and Swansea City man in the summer transfer window.

Guardiola already has a very good midfield department, and he may not need Shelvey in his squad.
