Jamie Carragher has said on Sky Sports Premier League (7:30pm, December 30, 2022) that he cannot believe how cheap new Liverpool signing Cody Gakpo is in comparison to Manchester United winger Antony.

Antony cost Manchester United £86 million (Sky Sports) when they signed him from Ajax in the summer of 2022.

Liverpool have paid PSV an initial transfer fee of £37 million for Netherlands international forward Gakpo (The Guardian).

And former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Carragher is surprised at the fee for the 23-year-old Gakpo.

Carragher said: “And the thing that surprised me was the price. I thought it would be a bit more expensive, certainly when you look at what Antony cost, probably similar profile of players, position. That was a really good deal for Liverpool.”

Let’s see who does better

Antony is a very good player, and so is Cody Gakpo, and it will be interesting to see how the Manchester United winger and the Liverpool forward do.

Gakpo is able to play out wide or down the middle, and the 23-year-old could be a star for Liverpool for years to come.

The Dutchman could take a while to settle in at Liverpool and adjust to life in the Premier League.

There would no pressure on Gakpo to hit the ground running at Liverpool.

Antony has not exactly been great at Manchester United, but he has shown in flashes what he is capable of.

The 22-year-old Brazil international winger has scored three goals in seven Premier League appearances for Erik ten Hag’s side so far this season.

Antony has not scored or given an assist in five UEFA Europa League matches for the Red Devils this campaign.
