Tottenham seemed to have landed a bargain over the summer as they snapped up Matt Doherty from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Spurs paid just £15million to sign Doherty, giving Jose Mourinho a proven Premier League option at right back – even though he had mostly been playing as a wing-back for Wolves.
However, Doherty has struggled to find form at Spurs, struggling in a back four as he now looks to be behind Serge Aurier and Japhet Tanganga in the pecking order.
Doherty wasn’t even in the squad to face Aston Villa on Sunday, and ESPN claim that his future at Tottenham is already in doubt.
On Wednesday night, Doherty tried to put his club struggles behind him as he started for Ireland as a right-sided wing-back in their World Cup qualifier against Serbia.
Doherty struggled again though, and couldn’t prevent Ireland from falling to a 3-2 defeat in Belgrade.

Now, League of Ireland hero and pundit Stuey Byrne has shared his honest verdict on Doherty’s display whilst speaking to Off The Ball.
Byrne suggested that Doherty is supposed to be Ireland’s best player but didn’t show up against Serbia, noting that he didn’t see much from the Spurs man as his struggles continue.
“Matt Doherty, has he showed up tonight?” said Byrne. “He’s supposed to be our best player, a £15milion signing for Tottenham. I didn’t see much of him tonight,” he added.
