Aston Villa re expected to be busy in the transfer market this month.

During an interview with BBC West Midlands Radio, Former Birmingham City player Martin O’Connor shared how he believes Aston Villa sold the wrong player, when they allowed Rudy Gestede to leave the club for Middlesbrough.

Villa boss Steve Bruce has explained on many occasions how he feels his squad is unbalanced, and that he has too many strikers at his disposal.

But O’Connor, who made 187 league appearances for Villa’s fierce rivals Birmingham City, told BBC West Midlands Radio how Gestede gives more to the team than McCormack, and that the Villans should have kept hold of the Benin international:

“If It was me, I would have sod Ross McCormack and kept Rudy Gestede. If you put McCormack in a team that is fluid and expansive and will give him chances, yes he is going to score, there is no doubt about that. It is about how Gestede affects the game for Aston Villa and works in both boxes, defensively too. You get more out of Gestede than you would Ross McCormack.”

Steve Bruce will be heavily reliant on McCormack now over the course of this month, after the sale of Gestede and Jonathan Kodjia’s participation in the African Cup of Nations.

Unless, of course, he manages to bring another striker into the club.

Many Villa fans believe they need another top class striker, if they are to have a realist chance of forcing their way inside the top six come May.

January is a notoriously difficult month to bring in quality acquisitions, however, and whether Bruce will be able to dramatically strengthen his options remains to be seen.
