Trevor Sinclair has admitted he is shocked that Arsenal didn’t push the boat out to sign Tammy Abraham from Chelsea this summer.
Arsenal were heavily linked with a move for the 23-year-old striker.
But in spite of widespread reports that he had his heart set on a move to North London [The Athletic], Abraham wound up signing for Roma in Italy.
This past weekend, the English hitman opened his account in style under Jose Mourinho, smashing home a fine first goal for the club.
And Sinclair feels that Arsenal will live to regret not going for him.
He told talkSPORT: “Tammy Abraham, I mentioned it before. I think they should’ve gone all out for him. The goal he scored the other day was unbelievable. He’s a great player, a great prospect and I think he’s the real deal.”
Will they regret it?
Well, quite possibly.
Long term, Arsenal need a new striker because Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette have a combined 62 years.
Aubameyang turned 32 this past summer and Lacazette is 30.
Neither will have plans to retire anytime soon but the fact remains that their best years are behind them and Arsenal really should’ve been planning for the future.
The Gunners spent £150 million on players during the summer and only one attacking player – Martin Odegaard, a number 10 – was signed.
That’s a big problem and if Arsenal struggle for goals again, like last season, then failing to stump up the £34 million needed to sign Abraham will look very suspect – particularly if he continues to impress and Italy and especially because he’s a boyhood Gooner who wanted the move in the first place.
