Steve Nicol has told ESPN that Timo Werner might have done a u-turn and decided not to join Liverpool.

The Leipzig hitman looks set to join Chelsea as the Blues reportedly triggered his £52 million release clause.

Werner has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool in recent months and Sky Sports claimed in April that the 24-year-old was ‘ready’ to join Jurgen Klopp’s outfit.

Nicol, who played for the Reds during his career, believes that his old club ‘slipped up’ in not bringing him to Anfield, but also believes that the player has perhaps ‘changed his mind’ on a move to Merseyside.

He told ESPN: “I think Liverpool have slipped up here. Saying that, I wouldn’t be surprised if Werner had something to do with this.

“At the end of the day, if you want to go somewhere you can make it happen. It looks to me like Werner has changed his mind.”

Did Werner change his mind? It’s definitely possible.

After all, just look at his competition. There isn’t many players in Europe good enough to break up the trident of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah, and Werner, if we’re honest, probably isn’t one of them until he proves that he’s a force in English football.

The German has 32 goals in all competitions for the Bundesliga side this season.
