Former Arsenal star Charlie Nicholas wrote on his column on Sky Sports about Emiliano Martinez.

The Argentine was called into action in the first half against Brighton after Bernd Leno injured his knee. The worst was feared about the German but Arsenal confirmed that he should be back in less than six weeks time.

Martinez did well for most parts of the game against Brighton but still conceded twice.

Nicholas seemed worried about the inexperienced goalkeeper, not because of his quality but the defence in front of him.

He said: “I thought Emiliano Martinez did well when he came on, but tell me any goalkeeper who could play behind this back four? They are left so exposed.”

“Martinez slightly got it wrong for the last goal but did not play badly at all. I cannot work out where a result is coming from for Arsenal at the minute.”

Arsenal have been shambolic at the back in both games since the restart. The Gunners conceded three against Manchester City and two against Brighton, at least three of those could have been easily avoided.

Martinez has had to wait for a long time for his chance. The Argentine has been at the club for almost a decade now and a start later tonight will only be his third in the Premier League.

Arteta has no option now but to trust him for another month at the very least. Martinez has impressed in all of his loan spells over the years and this is certainly his chance to give the Arsenal boss a selection headache once Leno is back fit.
