Craig Burley took to Twitter after Brazil had announced that Tottenham star Richarlison would start ahead of Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus, that he prefers Jesus to the Spurs man – before Richarlison went on to score a Brazil brace.

Richarlison, 25, was picked ahead of Jesus and other Brazilian stars on Thursday evening by Tite. That is despite the Spurs man only netting two goals this term for his new club. But his Brazil record is superb, in his 39 Brazil caps.

In his 39th cap, Richarlison took his tally of goals to an incredible 19 goals. Tapping home a parried Vinicius Jr. shot, the Madrid star then set him up. The Spurs man touched the ball into the air, and his bicycle kick flew into the net.

Jesus came on towards the end of the match but had little impact, as Brazil went on to win 2-0. Richarlison, the hero. Burley said before the match, “whatever happens” he would have Jesus over the new Tottenham star.

A Tweet that will have come back to haunt the ex-Arsenal man. The debate between Jesus and Richarlison is one that is likely to drag on beyond Thursday’s win. There is no doubt that Jesus has been better in the Premier League.

Richarlison has not been first choice for Spurs, because of Harry Kane. He has had to feed off scraps and then picked up an injury. So, the ex-Everton star does have work to do to get better under Antonio Conte at Tottenham.

But nevertheless, Burley might be regretting his Tweet before the game as Richarlison went on to shine. The Spurs man is a different animal for his country – while Jesus is a better club player, Richarlison is better for the Selecao.
