The midfielder had one of his best performances yet in a Leeds shirt last night against Fulham, going up against former England international and PFA Player of the Year, Scott Parker.
Leeds United’s Chris Wood scores their first goal
Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan singled him out for praise after the game on BBC Radio Leeds, and backed him to go on and get even better.
He said: “He did well. Your not going to get too much flair from him, he’s a little bit like Scott Parker. He does the job for Leeds he does for Fulham, getting the ball, starting play off, winning it back and clearing it.
“He is not dribble past five players and get you off your feet, but he can pick out passes. The inclusion of Bridcutt will see his game will come on laps and bounds. He’ll get better just by watching, and playing alongside Bridcutt.”
Liam Bridcutt
Phillips will have known his place in the team was under pressure due to Liam Bridcutt’s long anticipated arrival being announced yesterday, but his performance against Fulham will have given Monk food for thought.
Leeds face a tricky test against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend, hoping to use their point against Fulham as a springboard to securing their first win of the season.
Player like Phillips and Bridcutt who are willing to get stuck in and do the dirty work are essential to their success, and will help attacking talents like Pablo Hernandez and Kemar Roofe start to flourish.
