Danny Murphy believes Liverpool’s ‘firepower’ makes them a more serious Premier League challenger than Arsenal with Mo Salah, Darwin Nunez and Darwin Nunez all superior than the attackers Mikel Arteta has at his disposal.
Gabriel Jesus certainly raised plenty of eyebrows today when he told reporters, as quoted by the Daily Mail, that scoring goals is not his ‘strong point’.
That is quite the thing for your first-choice number nine to come out with. But, having found the net a ‘mediocre’ 15 times in 44 Arsenal appearances, the statistics certainly back up Jesus’ point.
And this, former Anfield hero Murphy believes, is typical of the difference between Arsenal and Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp boasting the sort of ‘firepower’ capable of blowing Mikel Arteta out of the water.

Are Liverpool title challengers again?
“It’s firepower for me, with those two. That’s the key,” Murphy tells talkSPORT (22 November, 12.40pm). “There’s lots of arguments with Liverpool and Arsenal where you would say ‘I’d rather have him’, and the managers are terrific.
“But when you look at Liverpool’s firepower compared to Arsenal’s…
“Nunez, Salah and Diaz would be the front three, and then you’ve still got Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo to back them up. I don’t think, when you name Arsenal’s, you feel the same (fear factor).”
Between them, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Jesus have scored only six Premier League goals this season. In fact, you can throw in Eddie Nketiah too and that cumulative tally is still just one better than Salah has managed all on his own.
10 Premier League goals already for Mo Salah
“Saka is not Salah. He’s a great player but he’s not (producing) Salah’s numbers. Nunez will score more than Jesus. Jota will score than Jesus. And Diaz will probably score more than Martinelli now he’s fit, or equal,” Murphy adds.
“For me, I think (Liverpool) will finish above Arsenal because of their firepower.”
Liverpool will face the toughest test yet of their title ambitions when they travel to reigning champions Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday lunchtime.
