Tony Cascarino comments on West Ham United’s disappointing start to the 2016-17 Premier League campaign.
Former Chelsea and Aston Villa striker Tony Cascarino has written in The Times that West Ham United’s season could fall apart.
The former Republic of Ireland international made the comments following West Ham’s stunning collapse against Watford in the Premier League at the weekend.
The Hammers were 2-0 up against Watford after 33 minutes at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon, but the home team conceded four goals thereafter to lose 4-2.
Slaven Bilic’s side’s start to the 2016-17 Premier League campaign has been disappointing, and Cascarino, who now works as a pundit for talkSPORT, believes that West Ham are in danger of having a bad campaign.
“Slaven Bilic has real problems at West Ham United,” Cascarino wrote in The Times. “His side are in danger of becoming the footballing equivalent of basketball’s Harlem Globetrotters — all style and no substance.”
“West Ham create lots of chances and have players like Dimitri Payet with the ability to pull off a rabona, as he did for their second goal, although Manuel Lanzini’s effort wasn’t quite as successful,” added Cascarino. “For all this ability going forward, Bilic’s side just don’t look as solid as last season.”
“Now settling in at their new stadium, a seventh-placed finish last season suggested that success could be just around the corner,” continued the former Republic of Ireland international.
“But as expectations grow, so does the pressure, which has already told, with West Ham crashing out of the Europa League. It can all fall apart so fast.”
West Ham have a good squad, but the Hammers have already been affected with injuries.
While Bilic’s side look very threatening in attack, defensively there are problems that need to be addressed.
However, it must be noted that among the Premier League matches the Hammers have been involved in so far this season, two of them were against Chelsea and Manchester City away – tough places to go and pick up even a point.
West Ham will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they take on West Bromwich Albion away from home at The Hawthorns in the Premier League.
