Pat Nevin believes that it’s ‘very, very scary’ that Everton have to rely on the creativity of academy starlet Anthony Gordon these days.
Frank Lampard hasn’t transformed the Toffees’ fortunes since taking charge at Goodison Park as Rafael Benitez’s replacement.
This past weekend, Crystal Palace hammered them 4-0 in the FA Cup to ensure that Everton have now conceded 10 goals in their last four games across all competitions.
The Merseysiders are 17th in the Premier League standings, three points above the relegation zone.
And Nevin has told Off the Ball in Ireland that it’s frankly terrifying that a 21-year-old is being looked at as the responsible figure to guide Everton to safety this season.
He said: “There is very little creativity in there. And if you are looking for a kid to come in and do it, which is what they are doing just now to develop it, it is tough, it is worrying. It is actually very, very scary and Frank looks scared and worried about it.”
Indeed, Lampard should be worried.
Everton are, honestly, rather shocking at the moment and it’s so difficult to see how – or who – is going to turn it around.
Nevin is right in suggesting that it’s unfair to ask Gordon to be that player for Everton.
However, desperate times call for desperate measures and it does look like he’s the most likely to spark a change of fortunes.
