Morgan Whittaker would be a ‘brilliant signing’ for Rangers with Mick Beale’s Glasgow giants looking to snap up £2 million-rated Swansea City playmaker during the January transfer window, former Championship ace Jobi McAnuff tells Sky Sports.

Rangers’ hopes of luring one of the EFL’s brightest young attackers to Ibrox could be over by the time the clock strikes 3.01pm on Saturday afternoon. Swansea are due to take on QPR in West London this weekend. And, if Whittaker features for Russell Martin’s side, well Rangers can kiss their hopes goodbye until the summer.

FIFA regulations state that no player can represent more than two clubs in a single season. And Whittaker has already donned the evergreen shirt of Plymouth Argyle this term; scoring nine times and setting up seven more during an outstanding loan at the League One title-challengers.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Swansea have now rejected a new-and-improved £1.5 million bid from Rangers. And, with the Swans just three points off the play-off places, Martin and co are in no rush to cash in on a player who’s creativity, skill and surgical left-boot could help turn those many, many draws into wins.

Rangers still hope to sign Morgan Whittaker from Championship outfit Swansea City

“He’s a top, top young player. He can play wide right or just behind the striker. He scores important goals, he’s a great dribbler and carries the ball well. He’s a fluid player who links into the attack very well and he’s got a fantastic left foot,” says McAnuff, formerly of Cardiff, Crystal Palace and Watford.

“I’m a little bit surprised by (the Rangers links). I thought there’d have been some real top-end Championship interest in him, because he has that huge potential to go on and have a really good career.

“If Rangers pull this off it’s a brilliant signing for them.”

The Scottish Sun believe Swansea value Whittaker at around £2 million. The prospect of promotion back to the Premier League, however, may have the 2013 League Cup winners postponing any potential sale until the summer.

Sky Sports now claim that Whittaker is likely to be involved as Swansea travel to QPR in 48 hours’ time.

But as one door closes, as they say, another swings open. Sky add that Norwich City’s Todd Cantwell is now ‘considering’ Rangers’ offer after talks with the Europa League finalists.
