Pundit Davie Provan has told The Scottish Sun that he thinks Celtic defender Shane Duffy simply hasn’t been good enough since his move to Parkhead.
The Bhoys wanted to bring in a new centre back over the summer, and were linked with a host of options before the deadline.
In September, Celtic pounced to beat a host of Premier League clubs to the signing of Duffy, landing him on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion.
It seemed like the perfect move; Duffy grew up supporting Celtic, and was a proven Premier League defender having impressed with Brighton.
Many expected him to dominate Scottish football, but he has endured a troubling few weeks having struggled against Rangers and then against Aberdeen too.
Duffy was in better form against Aberdeen on Sunday, but he also conceded a penalty against Lille on Thursday night with a clumsy challenge.
Celtic will hope that Duffy can finally settle down and find his best form again, but pundit and ex-Bhoys ace Provan has criticised the Irishman.
Provan has suggested that Duffy has ‘not been good enough’, having believed the would ‘stroll’ Scottish football, but now looks a shadow of the warrior he was at Brighton and needs to turn it around soon.
“Shane Duffy simply has not been good enough,” said Provan. “I’ll hold my hands up here, I saw enough of the big fella at Brighton to believe he’d stroll it in Scotland.”
“Alongside Lewis Dunk, he was a warrior for the south coast outfit, but for whatever reason he’s been all over the place for Celtic. The needless challenge that led to Lille’s penalty was typical of his judgment right now,” he added.
