Davie Provan doesn’t think Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes should take the job at Rangers if approached.
Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes celebrates
Pundit Davie Provan has told The Scottish Sun that Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes would be ‘insane’ to leave the Dons in order to take charge at Rangers.
The Gers are looking for a new manager, after seeing Mark Warburton resign from his post earlier this month, with assistant boss David Weir and head of recruitment Frank McParland also leaving the club.
Graeme Murty – who has been coaching Rangers’ young players this season – has been thrust into the role of caretaker manager in recent weeks, but after beating Morton 2-1 in the Scottish Cup, Rangers lost 2-1 at Dundee on Sunday.
Murty looks unlikely to win the job even until the end of the season, and fans have been left wondering who will replace Warburton, with a host of former Rangers men touted for the job.
Ex-Rangers boss Alex McLeish has been a prominent name in the managerial search, whilst former Gers players such as Frank de Boer, Billy Davies, Barry Ferguson and even Kevin Muscat have also been mentioned.
Another former Rangers player has been touted, as Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes is tonight 7/1 to become the new Rangers manager in what would be a return to Ibrox for the Dons manager.
McInnes, 45, made more than 50 appearances for Rangers as a player, and currently has his Aberdeen side six points clear of the Gers in the race for second place in the Scottish Premiership.
After a tough spell in England with Bristol City, McInnes has now rebuilt his reputation with Aberdeen, and many believe he would be ideal for the Rangers job given his ties to the club and his record in the Scottish Premiership.

However, pundit Davie Provan has had his say on the situation, telling The Scottish Sun that he thinks McInnes would be ‘insane’ to take the job right now, given the state Rangers are in and how powerful Celtic are right now.
Provan believes that whilst McInnes ticks all the boxes, with Frank de Boer unlikely to take the job, he has worked hard to rebuild his reputation as a manager, and leaving Aberdeen for Rangers would be a major mistake despite his ties to the club.
“Still not certain of clinching a Europa League place, Gers need an impact manager to put 30,000 volts through that dressing room,” said Provan. “Both currently out of work, Alex McLeish and Billy Davies would be up for that. In the longer term? Rangers punters shouldn’t waste their cash backing Frank de Boer. In their current state Rangers would be a hard sell for a man whose last job was in Serie A with Inter Milan. That leaves the guy with the best credentials — Derek McInnes.”
“Del stopped short of ruling himself out when asked about the Rangers job and he ticks all the boxes. He knows the territory after five years at Ibrox under Walter Smith. His affection for the club would go down well with Gers fans. But here’s the rub. Right now the Old Firm are the biggest mismatch since Wayne Biggins was running out for Lou Macari. After failure at Bristol City, McInnes has painstakingly rebuilt his reputation at Pittodrie. He’d be insane to put it on the line against Brendan Rodgers,” he added.
