It hasn’t been a brilliant first full season for Steven Bergwijn at Tottenham Hotspur yet.
The Dutchman joined Spurs in January and kicked off his time in North London with a bang by scoring on his debut against Manchester City.
But the former PSV winger doesn’t seem to be in Jose Mourinho’s strongest XI at the moment, having started just one of their six Premier League games.
Bergwijn has featured heavily in the Europa League and started last night’s 1-0 defeat by Antwerp in Belgium, but Mourinho took him off at half-time.
And speaking to ESPN, pundit Stewart Robson has questioned whether he’s good enough for the Lilywhites – or indeed for the Premier League in general.
He said: “Tonight proved maybe the squad isn’t as big as you think. Bergwijn I don’t think is quite good enough to play at the top level in the Premier League. Bergwijn probably knows Mourinho doesn’t really fancy him.”
It must be difficult for the Netherlands international as far as motivation goes.
After all, Tottenham only went and re-signed Gareth Bale last month in a move which could and probably did make Bergwijn consider whether he was a valuable member of the squad, given that the Welshman, when fully fit, is going to be playing ahead of him most weeks.
