Danny Murphy has told TalkSPORT that he thinks Rangers can catch Celtic next season, if Steven Gerrard is given the funds to make a couple of additions in the summer.
Celtic’s ninth league title in a row was confirmed yesterday, with the Scottish Premiership ended early.
Rangers ended the campaign 13 points behind their Glasgow rivals.
But Murphy does not think that Gerrard’s men are actually too far away from Celtic, and he has backed them to challenge next term.
“All you can do is use it as motivation for next season,” Murphy said.
“I don’t think they’re that far away. I don’t think there’s that big a gap. A couple more additions and I think they’ll be competitive.
“They’ll have learnt a lot this season, and you know how competitive Stevie is and Gary Mac.
“There will be a steely determination within the Rangers squad to overcome Celtic.”
Rangers will be desperate to stop Celtic next season, to ensure that they don’t win the league 10 times in a row.
Celtic have been aiming to make it into double figures for successive league victories for a number of years now, and it would hurt Rangers if they were unable to stop their rivals achieving the feat.
Rangers are likely to invest in the summer, as they have backed Gerrard with sizeable funds in recent times.
Rangers have made improvements under Gerrard’s stewardship so far, but whether they will be able to topple Celtic next year remains to be seen.
