Craig Burley has told ESPN that Mikel Arteta could come under serious pressure at Arsenal very soon.
The Gunners posted their worst performance of the season on Saturday in losing 3-0 to Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.
It wasn’t only the scoreline that sickened Arsenal fans but the performance.
Only one home player spent more time in the Reds’ half than his own – Martin Odegaard – and even Arteta admitted after the game that he was shocked by his side’s display.
The North Londoners are set for their worst Premier League finish since 1995, where they finished 12th.
At the moment, Arteta’s troops are 10th and with eight games left, it doesn’t look like they’re going to march up the table anytime soon, particularly not with them also being in the Europa League.
Failure to win Europe’s secondary competition would make it a dreadful first full season for the former Manchester City assistant – who won the FA Cup with Arsenal in August – and Burley believes that the 39-year-old could and should start to fear for his job come this summer, in that event.
He told ESPN: “At what point does he come under the scrutiny a lot of other managers have come under? Lampard lost his job and there are others. At some point, and it’ll probably be the end of the season when they sign players, like how do they start next year? That was a big concern for him [Arteta].”
