Pundit Andy Walker has told Sky Sports that he thinks Graeme Murty must win at least one game against Celtic to become permanent Rangers manager.

Murty, who stepped in as caretaker after Mark Warburton’s departure in February of last year, was working with the Rangers youth setup before being again asked to step in as caretaker boss following the sacking of Pedro Caixinha in October.

After failing with a bid to land Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes, Rangers make Murty the interim manager until the end of the season – and the Gers have been sensational since the turn of the year.

Sunday’s 4-1 win over Falkirk made it nine wins in ten games in 2018 for Rangers in all competitions, and their blistering form means that they now lie just six points behind league leaders Celtic.

The two Old Firm rivals meet at Ibrox this weekend, giving Rangers the chance to cut the gap to three points in the penultimate league meeting between the sides his season, with a Scottish Cup semi-final to come as well.

Murty, who has seen January signings Russell Martin, Sean Goss, Greg Docherty, Jamie Murphy and Jason Cummings thrive, will be hoping for positive results to boost his chances of landing the job permanently.

Rangers will re-assess the situation this summer, and pundit Andy Walker – formerly of Celtic – has offered his view on Murty’s future as Rangers manager.

Walker has told Sky Sports that he thinks Murty must win at least one game of the three against Celtic, warning him that if he can’t beat the Bhoys, Rangers will try to find somebody else who can.

“Murty has got three games against Celtic between now and the end of the season, and he’s on a short-term contract until the end of the campaign,” said Walker. “He has to win one of these games to secure the Rangers job on a more permanent basis. If you can’t beat Celtic as a Rangers manager, then you are out and the club will get someone new. That’s how crucial the next few months are for Graeme Murty,” he added.
