Tim Sherwood has said on Sky Sports News (1:51pm, October 8, 2022) that Liverpool central defender Virgil van Dijk needs to start playing well again.

The former Tottenham Hotspur manager believes that Van Dijk is playing at his own pace, and has urged the Liverpool defender to get back to his best.

Sherwood made the comments about the £220,000-a-week (Spotrac) Netherlands international centre-back while looking ahead to the Premier League game between Arsenal and Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium in North London on Sunday.

Sherwood said about Van Dijk: “Virgil needs to pull his finger out. He is the leader, he is the person.

“At the moment, he is playing at his pace. You can’t do tat in the Premier League. I think he needs to show more urgency and leadership.”

Big test

In our view, Liverpool will face a big test against Arsenal away from home at the Emirates Stadium in North London in the Premier League on Sunday.

Arsenal are in great form at the moment and appear to be in the race for the Premier League title this season.

Gabriel Jesus is showing his quality, and the Brazil international striker will be a major threat against Liverpool.

Van Dijk is a leader at the back, and the Dutchman will have to be on top of his game against the Gunners in oder for the Reds to have a chance of picking up all three points from the encounter.
