Everton could pair Marcel Brands with Marco Silva.
Everton sparked a new era on Wednesday, as they not only sacked manager Sam Allardyce, but also announced the arrival of Marcel Brands as the club’s new director of football.
The Toffees were looking for major changes after a disappointing campaign, and director of football Steve Walsh has lost his job following a string of poor signings, and has been replaced by Brands.
Brands, 53, has worked wonders with PSV Eindhoven since his 2011 arrival from AZ Alkmaar, and after winning three league titles, he has decided to try his luck in England with Everton.
Brands’ first priority is to appoint Marco Silva as the club’s new manager according to The Mirror, and with a focus on new signings too, one young player does have a surprising link between the two.
Back in November, Eindhoven Dagblad reported that Watford – then managed by Silva – were looking to raid Brands’ PSV with a move for teenager Armando Obispo, and whilst it’s unclear just how much of a say Silva had in that interest, he and Brands could team up to land him this time.
Obispo, 18, has been touted for a huge future with PSV, as Brands was quoted as telling Voetbal International that he thinks the Dutchman can become a first-team player for PSV in the coming years.
A talented young centre back, Obispo could bring some youth to an Everton back line containing the ageing Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka, whilst having to chance to play under Silva, months after Watford targeted him.
Everton did land one young Dutch defender last summer in Nathangelo Markelo, and Brands moving to sign another in 6ft 1in Obispo could make some sense this summer, adding to the developmental ranks at Goodison Park with a player he very recently hailed.
