Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United were both linked with the winger last week, but they would not have been impressed by his most recent display.

When scouts from Tottenham and West Ham saw that PSV Eindhoven bagged five goals during their Eredivisie clash with VVV Venlo on Sunday, they may have expected there to at least be some good news regarding one of their reported targets.

The Daily Mirror reported last week that Spurs and the Hammers were both looking at young winger Steven Bergwijn, who has quickly established himself as a first-team regular for PSV, so they would have been hoping that form from that point on justifies their interest and gives them reason to follow up that interest at some point down the line.

But while the 20-year-old has done well this term, his latest performance is one that he would probably like to forget, even if his teammates do not feel the same.

PSV won the game 5-2, but Bergwijn only played the first-half and failed to contribute a goal or assist before he was taken off to allow Mauro Junior to make his debut for the Dutch giants.

PSV coach Phillip Cocu would tell Dutch outlet VI after the game that the youngster did not do his job well. And with Mauro Junior actually getting on the scoresheet while he was on the pitch, perhaps Bergwijn is now facing a tough challenge trying to keep his place in the starting lineup.

Tottenham especially, are unlikely to get carried away with what a target does in just one Eredivisie game – following the struggles that Vincent Janssen endured after a sensational year in the Netherlands – but Bergwijn’s performance will surely leave both Spurs and West Ham needing to see a lot more from the youngster before they decide to follow up their interest with a concrete bid.
