PSG reportedly have a buyback clause for former academy star Xavi Simons, who Rangers missed out on this summer as the attacking midfielder signed for Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.

According to the Eindhovens Dagblad, the French giants negotiated a clause with the Eredivise club to re-sign Simons for a fee of €12m (£10m), an option that one day prove to be a bargain given the form of the 19-year-old European wonderkid this season.

Simons has already bagged eight goals and four assists in all competitions for PSV, and Rangers’ lack of urgency to sign the playmaker has seemingly shot them in the foot as the teenager continues to dazzle with the Dutch side in both the domestic league and the UEFA Europa League.

AS first reported all the way back in December of last year that Rangers were interested in signing Simons, with the club’s interest continuing throughout the summer transfer window. However, it was PSV who eventually won the race for the former FC Barcelona academy graduate.

Whilst Rangers did make some good business this summer, there’s no denying that the Scottish giants missed out on a gem in Simons. And with PSG now having quite a cheap buyback clause to bring the teenager back to the French capital, all hope of one day signing the Dutch talent feels all but gone at this point.

Indeed, Rangers could have won the race for Simons had they got off the block quicker in the summer. However, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side did no such thing. And as a result, PSV are reaping the rewards in a big way despite the looming threat of PSG bringing the midfielder back to France.

PSG are hardly a club who need to worry about saving pennies to keep the lights on. Yet that doesn’t mean the French club can’t delve themselves in making a few bargain signings, and Simons will be just that for the Ligue 1 champions in a few years time.

With Simons continuing to shine for PSV, it won’t be long until PSG are looking to bring the midfielder back after developing well in his home country. And for Rangers, the entire saga will prove to be a learning curve for Van Bronckhorst and his transfer team.
