Provan suggests what Celtic will make of Rangers’ Gerrard interest

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly keen to bring Steven Gerrard to Ibrox as their next manager.

Davie Provan has told The Scottish Sun that he is stunned by Rangers’ desire to bring Steven Gerrard to Ibrox as their next manager, and insisted that the links will leave Celtic already dreaming of securing 10 Scottish Premiership titles in a row.

The Daily Mail has recently reported that Gerrard is currently mulling over a contract offer from the Gers with only the finer details left to be agreed between the two sides.

Gerrard is yet to manage a senior side since retiring as a player, and Provan has suggested that it is a baffling gamble for the Light Blues to take given how the Pedro Caixinha appointment backfired so dramatically.

“If plucking Pedro Caixinha from the desert was a mistake, allowing Stevie G to cut his teeth at Ibrox would be criminal,” he told The Scottish Sun.

“When SunSport revealed Rangers’ pursuit of Gerrard, Peter Lawwell must have thought it was Christmas.

“He’s probably even ordered his kit-maker to get started on printing the Ten-in-a-Row commemorative shirts.

“Be in no doubt, Gerrard’s appointment would represent a reckless gamble for a club who can’t afford to get it wrong again.”

While Gerrard’s only managerial experience has come at academy level, there would be few first-time managers Rangers could target who could command as much respect as the former England captain will if he ends up getting the job.

That will not only benefit the existing squad, but it should also boost their chances of getting some exciting deals done during the transfer window as players will want to come and play for a Rangers side led by Gerrard.

It may be a huge gamble at this stage, but it could be the kind of risk that proves to be exactly what Rangers need as they look to close the significant daylight between themselves and the Hoops. And with many, including Provan, writing the potential appointment off as a mistake, Gerrard should have no trouble finding motivation to make the move a success if he does take the job.
