Swansea fans celebrated another historic European night on Twitter after their side’s 0-0 draw with Napoli.
The Swans kept Rafa Benitez’s Serie A heavyweights at bay for a full 90 minutes in the Europa League, even enjoying more chances than their Italian counterparts to leave the Liberty Stadium with a win.
And, with 69 per cent of possession and 21 shots on goal to Napoli’s nine, Swansea could well have travelled to Naples with a first-leg lead.
As it transpired, Garry Monk’s side could only manage a goalless draw – but the result still proved a magnificent achievement against a team of Champions League calibre (and a manager who was won both the Champions League and Europa League).
Captain Ashley Williams was extremely proud of his side’s performance, telling ITV Sport:
“I think we’re really pleased with the way we played. It told a lot that we were disappointed to come away with a 0-0. We created a lot of chances but the result was brilliant
“We’ve emphasised the message to play on the front foot and, at home, I think we did that tonight.
“We’re under no illusions it’s going to be tough going there [Napoli] but we take a lot of heart from tonight.”
But the Swansea fans were perhaps even prouder, taking to social media to express their delight with a side that, in only their first ever European campaign, has gone beyond their wildest expectations.
