Danny Mills gave his take on talkSPORT (1:34pm, November 8, 2020) on Tottenham Hotspur head coach Jose Mourinho’s decision to take off Gareth Bale in the second half against West Bromwich Albion today.

Bale was in action for Tottenham in their Premier League game against West Brom away from home at The Hawthorns this afternoon.

The Wales international winger, who returned to Tottenham on loan from Spanish and European giants Real Madrid in the summer of 2020, started the match and played for 78 minutes, as Mourinho’s side won 1-0.

Former Leeds United and Manchester City right-back Mills was on co-commentary duty for the match on talkSPORT, and he gave his take on the decision to take Bale off in the final stages of the second half.

Mills said about Bale on talkSPORT (1:34pm, November 8, 2020): “He hasn’t played for a long, long time. Okay, he has been training, but he is not match sharp.

“Mourinho will be keen to not push him too soon because you don’t want a player like that breaking down. Of course, he had a little bit of injury when he first signed.

“It’s just protecting him. It’s just easing him back in to get him up to speed in the quickest way but safest way possible.”

Gareth Bale Stats

According to WhoScored, against West Brom, Bale took two shots which were not on target, played one key pass, had a pass accuracy of 66.7%, won one header, took 38 touches, attempted one dribble, made two interceptions and two clearances, and put in four crosses.

It was not the best of performances from Bale, but the winger did work hard and tried to make things happen.

Tottenham fans should stay optimistic that the Wales international will get back to his best soon.
