According to Calciomercato, Liverpool and Everton are interested in signing Allan Saint-Maximin, a player who Jürgen Klopp loves.

What’s the story?

Well, when covering the news yesterday, we failed to mention that Klopp is a big fan of the entertaining Frenchman, who Newcastle paid £16.5m for.

Speaking in April ahead of Liverpool’s clash with the Magpies, the Chronicle quote the Reds boss as saying: “Mr Saint-Maximin is a proper footballer, he was injured and that was a blow but along with Joelinton they play really well together.”

It doesn’t surprise us at all that the German is a fan.

Klopp comes across as a manager who loves the flamboyant side of football, and wants to be entertained.

That is seen in the way his teams play football, and if he had Saint-Maximin in his squad, it would be a seriously exciting partnership.

The Newcastle No.10 records a remarkable 4.2 dribbles per game, and has started the season on fire.

Saint-Maximin has scored two goals and provided three assists in six Premier League appearances so far this term.

Where would Allan Saint-Maximin fit at Liverpool?

As good as he is, we can’t see Saint-Maximin getting into Klopp’s side ahead of forwards such as Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

However, having a player like the former OGC Nice speedster in your ranks is always a bonus – he can play anywhere across the frontline.

Klopp could use Saint-Maximin in rotation with Salah and Mane, or he could even use him at centre-forward.

One think about Klopp’s system is that the attackers certainly don’t hold their position 100% of the time, so he would have license to roam.

In our view, signing Saint-Maximin – or a similar trickster such as Wilfried Zaha – would elevate Liverpool to another level in terms of depth.

It could even see them compete in domestic cups, which seem to have been neglected with the Premier League and Champions League taking priority.
