Ian Wright says Liverpool’s assist-breaking defender Andy Robertson is now ‘proper elite’ after Jurgen Klopp’s side’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa on Boxing Day.
The 28-year-old assisted Liverpool’s opening goal following a quite outrageous pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold, which he used to guide into the path of Mo Salah across the six-yard box.
That assist from Robertson was his 54th for the Reds, from 231 Premier League games, and it surpasses the 53 assists (from 420 games) that Leighton Baines provided in Everton colours.
Whilst Baines has now hung up his boots, for Robertson, he is still going strong and there is no doubt that he will well and truly smash that record for most assists by a defender during the Premier League era.
Nonetheless, former Arsenal striker Ian Wright spoke about Robertson’s time on Merseyside and how he initially struggled when he first joined, as he told MatchDay Extra on Premier League Productions (26/12/22 at 10:55 pm).
“For £8 million, coming in for Moreno,” said Wright. “Moreno was there and you were thinking ‘when was he going to get his chance?’. It took him quite a while to get into the side and then he has gone on to improve, not just on the pitch, but off the pitch with all the great work he does up in Scotland.
“We are talking about a proper elite player. That goal, Trent Alexander Arnold’s ball and his touch, made it very, very easy for Mo to have a tap in. But that was world-class, the set-up to that goal.”
ONE OF LIVERPOOL’S BEST
There are many more years for Robertson to provide great moments for Liverpool and he could even argue that his best football is still ahead of him.
From winning the European Cup to securing Premier League glory, he will want many more medals added to his individual cabinet.
But when the dust does settle, there’s no doubt that he could argue that he is one of Liverpool’s best-ever left-backs and perhaps in the conversation to be named into his side’s greatest-ever XI.
