The Stoke City future of former Sheffield Wednesday favourite Glenn Whelan is said to be under threat

An experienced leader who could help keep them in the Premier League, or one whose nous could help to end their top-flight exile; Glenn Whelan’s signing would be a smart one for Sheffield Wednesday, whichever division they’re in next season.
It’s nearly a decade since the midfielder left Hillsborough to join promotion-chasing Stoke City, for whom he has appeared on just shy of 300 occasions at the highest level.
But his time in the Potteries could be coming to an end, with the Telegraph reporting that Whelan, along with Republic of Ireland teammate Jonathan Walters, is facing an uncertain future as he approaches the final 12 months of his contract.
Stoke are said to want to reduce the average age of their squad this summer, leaving Whlean, who turned 33 in January, at risk despite his 22 Premier League starts this term.
Should the Potters decide to part ways with their long-serving number 6, then a return to Wednesday would surely appeal to the Dubliner, who credits the Owls with making him the player he is during a three-and-a-half-year spell spanning two divisions.

Wednesday are likely to strengthen in Whelan’s position whether they are promoted or not this summer, having often found themselves short of bodies in central midfield.
And while they say you should never go back, Whelan is one of few players for which an exception should be made (there’s room for you too, Chris Brunt).
