Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has been a surprising name mentioned as a possible candidate to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Everton following the Italian’s exit to join Real Madrid – and prominent journalist Fabrizio Romano has backed up The Athletic‘s report that the Ibrox manager is a genuine candidate but insists he isn’t the Toffees number one choice.

Ancelotti’s surprise return to Madrid has left them looking for a new boss and Gerrard’s stunning season at Ibrox has garnered plenty of attention in his home city of Liverpool.
However, Gerrard’s history with the red side of the city have many fans sceptical that he would join Everton even if they were to offer him the job.
Romano claims that the Goodison Park side have “many options” to take over from Ancelotti with the Toffees not appearing to be in a real rush to make an appointment.
“They have a long list with many options, Romano told The Here We Go Podcast. “There’s some mention from England about Steven Gerrard that is true but he’s not at the first position on the list. Let’s see in the next days what Everton will decide.
“They want to decide and to plan for the right man for the job. It was a shock with Ancelotti so they need to plan for something new, a new project. Also, the players didn’t know about the situation with Ancelotti.
“They were really surprised yesterday so let’s see what happens in the next days but Everton are planning with director Marcel Brands to rebuild with a new manager.”
Would Gerrard consider joining Everton?
Gerrard has made no secret of his desire to take charge at Liverpool in the future and it is difficult to see him in the hotseat at any other Premier League club.

With his family still living near Liverpool, there would be some obvious benefits for Gerrard to return to England.
While there have been plenty of players to play for both Liverpool clubs over their career, only William Edward Barclay has managed both – incredibly, Barclay was the first manager of Everton and then staying to manage the newly-formed Liverpool when Everton moved from Anfield to Goodison Park.
