Gary Neville has stated that there is a ‘mistake’ in Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, but he seems to perform better for England than at club level.
Speaking from Qatar, Neville compared England’s number one to Qatar’s goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb, who had a game to forget on his nation’s opening World Cup night as they fell to a 2-0 defeat to Ecuador, as he told beIN SPORTS (20/11/22 at 6:55 pm).
Neville shared the types of mistakes Al Sheeb made on Sunday, being rash in between the sticks, coming off his line in an uncontrollable manner and not being able to gather crosses into the box, is what Pickford seems to do when in Everton colours.
That might well be the case, and barring that mistake against Bournemouth, he has been outstanding in the Premier League during the past 18 months.
And whilst fans can still question what he produces on the domestic scene, he has been faultless when donning the colours of his country and he will be expected to start England’s World Cup opener against Iran on Monday.
“England’s defenders aren’t in great form,” said Neville. “There is a mistake in them. There is a mistake in the goalkeeper.
“Although I have to say, the goalkeeper’s form for England is far better than sometimes his form for Everton. He plays well for England and seems to suit international football.
“To be fair, the types of problems he has at Everton are the type of problems that Qatar keeper had in that first half. But that is unusual at the international level.”
PICKFORD DESERVES MORE CREDIT
The Everton number one has had his problems during his career and those error-prone ways will always follow him, regardless of what he does.
But it shouldn’t hide what he has produced for England and he deserves more respect for his performances.
He might not win all of his critics over, but, during these past four years, when the Three Lions have reached the semi-finals of the World Cup and the final of Euro 2020, he has been one of the standout performers.
