Iceland’s hopes of qualifying for the World Cup were handed a major boost on Tuesday night, as they defeated Ukraine 2-0 in Reykjavik.

The surprise package of the entire Euro 2016 campaign have been bidding to make it to the World Cup as well, even after Lars Lagerback quit his post, leaving Heimir Hallgrimsson to take full charge of the side.

Tuesday’s meeting with Ukraine was vital to their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup, and they picked up a comfortable 2-0 win thanks to a brace from midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The Everton ace pounced on a defensive mix up to turn home from close range, before adding a second from the edge of the box after a lay-off from Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.

That leaves Iceland second in Group I, level on points with group leaders Croatia and occupying a play-off spot with two games to go in the UEFA qualifying.

Goalscorer Sigurdsson now returns to domestic football with Everton, who will take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League this weekend, and Toffees fans were delighted with his international exploits.

Fans took to Twitter to hail Sigurdsson for his two-goal display, joking that he could play up front given that Everton failed to bring in a new striker before last week’s transfer deadline.

Others were simply happy to see him complete 90 minutes as he attempts to build up his fitness levels after a disrupted pre-season, with some joking about him outplaying former Everton target Andriy Yarmolenko with his impressive display.
