Speaking on the BBC Radio Five Live Football Daily Podcast, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has been discussing Newcastle’s transfer plans and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
The Magpies have been linked with a plethora of new strikers this summer from Hugo Ekitike to Alexander Isak, but according to Edwards, one player they’re big fans of is Calvert-Lewin.
The journalist stated that Newcastle really wanted to sign the Everton striker, but unfortunately, they’ve been priced out of a move as the Toffees value him at £60m.
What’s been said?
Edwards spoke about Calvert-Lewin.
“Do you know who they are looking at Kevin, and this is the problem, because of FFP and because they haven’t done the sponsorship deals yet, they are working to a budget,” Edwards said.
“They really like Dominic Calvert-Lewin and they really wanted him, and Ivan Toney at Brentford, but at £60m and £50m they’re just not going to go there. That is the problem they’re going to have, clubs think they have deep pockets, and in the future they will, but the reality is that they can’t afford to spend £60m on one player.
“They really would have liked to do Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but they haven’t been able to because of that asking price,” Edwards said.

Can’t just spend
Newcastle United may be the richest club in world football, but unfortunately for the Magpies, they’re bound to the same FFP rules as everyone else.
PIF could drop £60m on a footballer without giving it a second thought if FFP wasn’t a factor, but the reality is that Newcastle have to be rather careful with their spending.
£60m on Calvert-Lewin is probably doable within those boundaries, but that would mean that United probably couldn’t strengthen other areas, which is an issue.
Any Newcastle fans expecting an overnight transformation into the best team in England have another thing coming.
