Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Ian Wright has been discussing the penalty shootout between Liverpool and Chelsea at the weekend.
The Reds and the Blues played out one of the highest-quality shootouts you’re likely to ever see at Wembley. Between them, they netted 21 straight spot-kicks, and many were scored with incredible precision.
However, Wright was less than impressed by two players and their penalty kicks, Ibrahima Konate and Timo Werner.
Indeed, the pundit says that Konate and Werner’s penalties were the worst of the bunch, stating that Konate’s should have been saved by Kepa.
What’s been said?
Wright gave his view on the penalties.
“The Konate penalty, that was probably the worst, alongside Timo Werner’s it was probably the worst two penalties. Konate’s penalty was perfect for a goalkeeper to save, it was at that nice height, nowhere near the side netting and it was in the middle of the goal. He got a hand to it, but he still couldn’t save it, that for me, it was like’ my God, this isn’t going to work out,’” Wright said.

Got the job done
Was Konate’s penalty a good one? Not by any stretch of the imagination, but he got the job done, and that’s what matters.
There’s a reason the 22-year-old was the Reds’ 10th designated penalty taker, he’s not the best striker of a ball and he’s incredibly young.
While his spot kick probably would have been saved more often than not, he got away with it at the weekend, and that’s all that matters.
