Herculez Gomez has told Lille star Jonathan David to secure a transfer to Aston Villa instead of Manchester United.

The former USMNT forward and South American football expert thinks Jonathan David could become a ‘big player’ under Unai Emery at Aston Villa.

But he feels a move to Old Trafford would be a bad choice because of the ‘toxicity’ at Manchester United, with Erik ten Hag and the Glazers, as he told ESPN.

Aston Villa don’t exactly need a striker because Ollie Watkins is one of the best in the Premier League, but they could do with cover and more added quality.

It’s a different story for Manchester United because, once again, they have splashed big money on forward players, yet it hasn’t worked, so they could do with more threat during the January transfer window.

Jonathan David has been a player long-linked with a move to the Premier League and Herculez Gomez says it ‘doesn’t surprise’ him that Aston Villa and Manchester United are keen on him.

Jonathan David to Aston Villa or Manchester United?

“Let me just say that it doesn’t surprise me Jonathan David is being linked to these two teams,” said Gomez

“What team is better for him? Jonathan David, stay away from Manchester United. Stay away from the toxicity that is Manchester United, that is Erik ten Hag and that is the Glazers, as of this moment. Go as far away as possible as you can.

“Now, Aston Villa, WOW!. You had my curiosity, but now you have my full attention. Let me throw out some names to you, Leon Bailey. He is a great case of what Unai Emery and Aston Villa have been able to do for the player, under his previous two coaches at Villa, he wasn’t doing well and wasn’t the hype and promise you saw at Leverkusen. And they paid big money for him. But now under Unai Emery, we are seeing a player blossom at Aston Villa.

“What does Unai Emery ask of his nine? You need the ability to stretch the backline, but when you don’t stretch it. Come underneath and act as a ten. Act as a playmaker. Be good with the ball. That is Jonathan David. With Unai Emery, he can be a prime player and a big player in the Premier League. I absolutely love this move for Jonathan David if it were to transpire.”

Jonathan David is ready for the Premier League

The Canada star isn’t having the most prolific of seasons, with five Ligue 1 goals from 17 matches and ten goals in 24 games in all competitions.

But the quality and goal threat has always been there from the quick-thinking player.

If David is going to move to the Premier League, then he has to do it sooner rather than later because the interest in him will soon fade away.

Going to Villa would be an interesting move because he would suit Emery’s style and would get enough minutes with the team in Europe.

But he would have to play a back-up role to Watkins.
