According to the Sun, Steve Bruce is desperate to land the vacant manager’s job at Aston Villa.

They report that the former Hull City manager is one of the leading candidates to replace Roberto di Matteo at the club.

Indeed, according to the newspaper, he has already started to assemble a list of people who he would want to form his backroom staff.

Among them is reportedly Middlesbrough coach Steve Agnew, who worked as Bruce’s assistant for more than two years at Hull City before making the switch to the Riverside.

While an approach is speculation at this moment in time, the comments that the potential new Villans boss made about his colleague at the time of his departure hint he will be more than keen on a reunion at Villa Park.

“Before you talk about his ability as a coach or an assistant, you have to say he’s a really good man,” the Birmingham Mail reports him saying.

“He was very enjoyable to work with. His glass was always half full. He never ever lets himself get too down.”

“He’s always bubbly and lively and on top of that, he’s a very good coach. I enjoyed working with him immensely for two and a half years.”

Whether Agnew would want to make the switch is a matter that is up for debate.

He enjoyed good times alongside Bruce with the Tigers but now finds himself coaching in the Premier League with Middlesbrough.

That is likely an opportunity he will be reluctant to give up, especially for a return to the Championship.

What does seem more certain, however, is that Bruce will at least propose it should he get the job, especially with these comments in mind.
