Steven Gerrard has revealed to The Scottish Sun that it was a very easy decision to leave Alfredo Morelos out of his Rangers squad on Saturday.
Gerrard’s side got back to winning ways by comfortably beating Kilmarnock 2-0 at Ibrox yesterday afternoon.
New striker Kemar Roofe opened the scoring on 50 minutes, before Ryan Kent added a second in the final quarter.
Interestingly, there was no sign of the controversial Rangers hitman anywhere in the squad, amid speculation about a move to Lille.
And the Gers boss has revealed that it was a ‘pretty simple’ decision to leave him out, hinting that the 23-year-old hasn’t been pulling his weight in training.
Gerrard told The Scottish Sun: “I think you guys will decide how big a decision it was but for me it was pretty simple.
“We need players who work hard every single day and who are ready and focused for the challenges coming up.”
The truth is that Gerrard doesn’t really need to pander to Morelos any longer.
Roofe, a £3.5 million signing, looks like he could be a truly excellent addition by the Ibrox club and the truth is that he’s more than likely going to score a lot of goals.
Before Roofe and Cedric Itten were signed, the Rangers boss sort of had to play Morelos because, with Jermain Defoe injured, there was nobody else, but he has plenty of options now and the Colombian – a £1 million signing three years ago [The Times] – would be wise to remember that.
