Ian Wright stated that Tottenham loanee, Gareth Bale, needs to do ‘more’ for Wales after his ‘pretty poor’ showing in their Euro 2020 opener from the weekend, as he told his own official podcast.
Even though Bale didn’t play much for Tottenham this season, he was still efficient when called upon and he had the best goal per minutes ratio than anyone else in the Premier League this season.
But the Spurs fan favourite wasn’t able to transcend that on the European stage as Wales recorded a 1-1 draw against Switzerland at Euro 2020 over the weekend.
“Do you think we are looking for too much from an Aaron Ramsey and a Gareth Bale,” asked Wright.
“I am not saying they are going to do a 2016, with the way their performances were. Outstanding, as two integral players.
“I thought that Gareth Bale was pretty poor (in Euro 2020 opener) for what they are going to need from him in this tournament. Yes, it’s the first game and hopefully, he will build more into it.
“But I just need to see more from him in certain areas of the pitch. A little more dynamism from him, just a little bit more.”
After their semi-final ride at Euro 2016, Wales will be heading for a potential early exit if they lose to Turkey tomorrow.
Turkey were well-beaten by Italy in their opener and Bale will be licking his lips at the prospect of coming up against a side that struggled to lay a glove on their opponents last time out.
And when all of this is all over, it will be interesting to see what Bale does with his future.
On paper, he is due back at Real Madrid, and with Carlo Ancelotti back at the helm, it does probably change matters because a return to Spurs seems unlikely now.
