Keith Downie has told Good Morning Transfers on Sky Sports (09/08/21 at 9:50 am) that Newcastle have ‘pretty much blown’ their transfer budget on Joe Willock.
If the Arsenal midfielder makes his expected move to St James’ Park then Downie shared that Newcastle will target the loan market, with a ‘midfield enforcer’ and a ‘cover centre-back’ the next possible targets.
Rumours have suggested that Newcastle are about to pay £20 million+ for Willock’s services following his successful loan spell at St James’ Park last season.
That’s Steve Bruce’s number one summer transfer target edging closer to a return to North East, as Downie shared what will happen next.
“Of course they (the fans) want more than that,” said Downie. “I think, with regards to Newcastle, this potential signing of Willock has pretty much blown Steve Bruce’s budget this window.
“I don’t think there will be any more funds on him to spend on players. I think he will have to look at the loan market. He did try to bring in Conor Gallagher from Chelsea. Instead, he went to Palace.
“I do think he will try to bring in another central midfielder. A midfield enforcer, someone who can complement Joe Willock.
“I cannot see them spending another £20-25 million on another player. Willock is pretty much the main man as far as that’s concerned. He will look to the loan market to probably add one, maybe two players. A central midfielder and a cover player at centre-back.”
It’s probably no surprise to the Newcastle faithful that they aren’t going to make any more dents to their transfer budget this summer.
But then again, have Newcastle really made any dents in their back pockets since Mike Ashley has been in charge?
Either way, this potential Willock capture will lift the fans because, during his brief time in the North East, he became a bit of a fan favourite.
It’s going to be interesting to see what the expectations will be on Newcastle this season because they don’t have the squad to push for Europe, but better performances, at the very least, will be expected.
In other words, more entertainment is required.
