Preston and Wigan are weighing up moves for highly-rated Wycombe Wanderers defender Aaron Pierre, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Pierre is regarded as one of the best defenders in the lower leagues after impressing in League Two with Wycombe for the last couple of seasons.

The powerful centre-back has been instrumental for Wycombe since joining from Brentford in the summer of 2014 and his performances have not gone unnoticed higher up the football pyramid with a number of clubs keeping tabs on his progress.

Pierre is in the final year of his contract at Adams Park and he has yet to sign a new deal alerting a number of clubs to his possible availability on a free transfer next summer.

Preston and Wigan are long-term admirers of the 23-year-old and they again watched the defender in action in midweek in their EFL Trophy win over West Ham United’s under-23s, helping Wycombe keep a clean sheet in the 3-0 victory.

Wycombe are reluctant to lose Pierre and they are bracing themselves for interest in the player when the transfer window reopens, and they could be forced to sell him then rather than risk losing him on a free transfer next summer.
