Johnson, who has made 71 appearances, scoring 17 goals for Preston, is regarded as one of the best young talents outside the Premier League.
The former Crystal Palace trainee came through the ranks at Aston Villa and was highly-regarded within the corridors of power at Villa Park.
However, Johnson did not make a senior appearance for Villa and spent time out on loan at Yeovil, Chesterfield and Oldham to get first-team experience before joining Preston.
Preston were keen to tie down Johnson to a new deal to ward off interest from Premier League sides and rival Championship clubs.
News of Johnson’s new deal will come as a massive boost to Preston after an indifferent start to the new Championship campaign which has seen them win just one of their opening four games.
