Leeds United moved back up to second in the Championship table on Tuesday night, by beating Preston North End 2-0 at Deepdale.

The Whites had lost to Birmingham City on Saturday in a dent to their automatic promotion hopes, whilst Preston were beaten by Leeds’ promotion rivals Sheffield United.

It was a must-win game for both teams, and after a tight first half which Leeds shaded, Preston shot themselves in the foot as Ben Pearson’s disciplinary problems continued with another red card.

Leeds took full advantage as Patrick Bamford smashed home a long-range strike, and he headed home a second to seal a vital 2-0 win, and put the pressure back on Sheffield United in the race for automatic promotion.

Leeds were the better side for much of the game as Preston just couldn’t get a grip of possession well enough, and it was clear that many of their key players were lacking in sharpness after recent injuries.

That’s not to take anything away from a strong Leeds performance, who limited North End to just five shots, none of which were on target as Kiko Casilla enjoyed an easy evening.

Preston’s play-off push is all but over, but some North End fans took to Twitter to praise Leeds as the better team on the night and one of the best teams they’ve seen this season, believing that they should go up in second place ahead of Sheffield United.

Some noted that Leeds are the team Preston are aspiring to be, but just couldn’t really get close to them on the night, with supporters complimentary of Marcelo Bielsa’s side despite the pain of defeat.
