The Lilywhites ace scored an own goal in a game at Elland Road but that wasn’t the end of it.
Preston North End midfielder Alan Browne has given an interview to the Daily Mail in which he talked about his career so far and spoke about how some Leeds United fans contributed to the most embarrassing moment of his time as a footballer.
The 23-year-old has been with the Lilywhites since his January 2014 move from Irish club Cork City and over the past season and a half has developed a knack for goalscoring, with statistics backing this up.
With close to 200 appearances in all competitions for Preston under his belt, his tally of 26 goals and nine assists (Transfermarkt) seems decent enough as it is, but this term alone he has bagged 11 goals in just 30 Championship games and 20 goals in his last two seasons at Deepdale (Daily Mail).
In the interview, Browne spoke about such things as the toughest opponent he had faced (Steven Nzonzi), the best moment of his career so far (winning the League One playoff final with Preston) and his idol from a young age (Steven Gerrard).
When asked about his most embarrassing moment, he spoke about a 1-0 defeat to Leeds at Elland Road in December 2015, in which he scored an own goal, and he explained just how salt was rubbed into the metaphorical wound.
“I didn’t mind scoring an own goal, it was just that I was taking the kickoff straight after and they had it up on the big screen,” said Browne. “They replayed it two or three times and I just had to stand there and watch it. The fans celebrated every time.
“At the time, you think it’s the worst thing ever, but looking back on it now, I find it quite funny. I’m not sure our fans thought it was funny at the time, but it’s a lesson learned and these things happen in football. You get to realise that as you get older.”
