The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was outstanding as Denmark triumphed in their World Cup play-off.
Prior to Denmark’s World Cup play-off against the Republic of Ireland, we tipped Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen to prove his worth, but even we did not expect the 25-year-old to blow Martin O’Neill’s side away with one of the most impressive performances of his career to date.
A hat-trick in a 5-1 victory reinforced the belief that the Tottenham play-maker is on the course to becoming a superstar, and the pressure will now be on the play-maker to maintain his fine form for his country at Russia 2018.
After his headline-grabbing performance earlier this week, Eriksen will be a target for every midfield enforcer and the subject of every opposing manager’s tactics board when the competitive action kicks off next summer, and it will be interesting to see how he deals with it.
After all, as good as Tottenham fans know Eriksen has been over the last few seasons, he has been a rung or two down from those players who generate the headlines week in, week out.
Not so anymore, and it is now up to the Spurs supremo to handle that pressure and feed off it.
That is well within his capabilities and one wonders if, rather than Harry Kane or Dele Alli, Eriksen will be Tottenham’s standout performer when the greatest of international football tournaments kicks off in just a few short months
