Arsenal’s January transfer window is expected to be a quiet one, but they could still benefit financially from a deal made in the past.

The Gunners have shown interest in Marc Guehi, but beyond that, there’s little expectation of any major activity this month.

Andrea Berta will still be monitoring the market and won’t hesitate to move if an opportunity comes up – whether it’s bringing someone in or letting someone go.

But while Berta is currently managing things, it’s actually a move made by his predecessor Edu Gaspar that could end up providing Arsenal with an unexpected financial boost.

Nuno Tavares isn’t exactly remembered fondly by many Arsenal supporters.

The left-back never really found his footing at the Emirates. After a loan spell at Lazio under Edu, he moved there permanently in the summer of 2025, just as Andrea Berta was coming in.

According to Alfredo Pedulla – quoting the Besiktas president – Tavares is expected to join the Turkish club in a deal worth around £15m. With a 35% sell-on clause included when he left for Lazio, Arsenal stand to pocket a significant sum from this move.

Berta’s role includes improving Arsenal’s sales strategy as well as attracting new talent, and deals like this show how the club is working on building more sustainable income streams over time.

How Nuno Tavares has performed since leaving Arsenal

Tavares has been the source of frustration for fans in recent years, often cited as one of the club’s most disappointing signings.

The Portuguese left-back hasn’t found a consistent place in any squad yet and is only now looking at a permanent move that could help him finally settle.

He’s managed to play fairly regularly since leaving the Gunners, though it’s been inconsistent.

His best run came with Marseille, where he scored six goals in 39 appearances. But his loan spell at Nottingham Forest the following season didn’t go as well.

Over the past year, he has made 40 appearances for Lazio, which helped pave the way for his potential move to Turkey.

Given Arsenal initially paid £7m for him and are now set to recoup another £5m just a year after his departure, it looks like they’ve come out of the deal reasonably well.
